Yes, yet another WoW blog! What makes this one differently from all the others you ask? The honest answer would probably be “not much”. My main motivation for creating this blog is to have somewhere to share various brain farts I have about the game we all love, and others love to hate. The blog will not have a particular theme since I pretty much plan to blog about anything wow related that’s on my mind at the time. Thus the name Barrens Chat.
To give my self an easy start the first post will be an introduction of the author of the blog. So here it goes!
Let’s get the boring RL stuff out of the way, shall we? I’m an 18 year old (soon to be 19, can I get a whoop?) self proclaimed geek. As any geek with any self respect I enjoy my books, movies, music, tv-series, games and of course, WoW. If I’m not doing any of what’s mentioned above I’m probably with friends (doing some of the things mentioned) or at school where I study “health and social studies” hoping to one day become a psychatrist, or perhaps a radiologist, or perhaps even a teacher? Or something completely different, I honestly have no idea. But that’s enough about me! Let’s move on to the more interesting stuff!
WoW was my first MMORPG ever. I came into the game as a complete newb. Too give you some idea of how clueless I was; I pictured a Final Fantasy 7-ish, turn based game when a friend first told me about the game he was currently playing in open beta, which I didn’t understand what meant either. My friend eventually talked me into getting the game, and after getting my subscription set up (with two nervous looking parents peeking over my shoulder, asking if this thing is safe to pay for) and gotten instructions on which server to start on, I sat down and looked at the character creation screen. What I did next I’m not proud of, in fact very few people know about this, I rolled…
Hold on, I just need to pull my self together to say this.
I rolled a Night Elf Hunter. There. I said it. It’s out there. Hopefully, Mike Schramm of WoW Insider is on to something when he said that “Everyone’s first character was a Night Elf Hunter”. WoW was released right after the LOTR craze (coincidence?), so I guess a lot of people wanted to run around pretending to be Legolas (or Legolaz, Legolol, Legolasz). Fortunately, he got deleted quickly since I couldn’t stand the Night Elf starting area, which I still can’t. After that embarrasing episode I tried several class and race combos before finally settling on a Dwarf Paladin. I named him Gliib and he would eventually be my first level 60, see both Ragnaros’ and Nefarion’s downfall, even poke his head inside the necropolis Naxxramas, before eventually retiring in peaceful Nagrand.
Over four years(!) after I first started playing WoW, I am now running around Ulduar as a tree, while leveling a few alts on the side (I’m an altaholic, but I’ll save that for another post). I’ve been in the same guild for 1,5 years and I don’t see my self leaving the game any time soon.
