Right, haven’t been looking forward to this one, mostly because I’m not quite sure what to talk about. I’m sure 99% of the WoW population have played a DPS character at some point, except for those few nutjobs who level up with a healing or tanking specc (I actually did do 70-80 as resto). I guess you could say that DPS is something for everyone, atleast to some degree. That’s the thing with playing a DPS-class, if you were to ask me what I think of it I’d probably say something like “It’s alright.”, I just tend to get bored with it really quickly.
The major reason I tend to get bored with them is that I have no motivation for trying to play well, other than to top the dreaded damage meters, which eventually gets boring as well. I do see some of the fun in the theory crafting aspect of it. Playing around with speccs, rotations, continously trying to improve your DPS as much as possible. But if you look at the big picture it really doesn’t matter if I do 3453 DPS instead of 3323. This leads me to another point. When I’m in a group (either 5, 10 or 25-man) I enjoy the feeling of making a difference to the outcome of a fight and I just don’t get that feeling while DPS-ing. Obviously we wouldn’t be able to take down anything if it weren’t for the DPS, but there is just something about healing the MT when he’s at 500 health and about to get hit, or to grab the mob who’s going for the healer right before it gets a chance to one shot him/her, that sustaining a high DPS simply can’t beat.
Now, what could Blizzard do to make it more exciting? They have taken some steps in the right direction, leaps compared to what you did back in Vanilla WoW. Clicking the cubes at Maggy’s, killing the trash too keep it from healing XT-002 and killing and stacking orbs at Malygos comes to mind. These are all fights were everyone has something to look out for and people got specific tasks. But there are still fights in the game where I as mage would go 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 2, 1, 1, 1, 2, etc. for several minutes. Give me more of the class/role specific stuff and make it even more complex and I’m sure I’d enjoy playing a DPS-character a lot more.
So who is your average DPS-er then? As mentioned before I think pretty much everyone has played one at some stage and the majority of players at lvl80 has DPS as their main specc/role, so it’s hard to say that “your average DPS-er is this or that”. One common trait amongst those who play them are that they are comptetitive. This can be both a good thing and a bad thing. Trying to be the best DPS in an instance/raid makes you perform better which in turn makes bosses die faster, but it also leads to people ignoring other tasks and having an urge to wiggle their e-peens in everyones faces. Generally I think everyone enjoys DPSing to one degree or the other, while tanking and healing is more of a niche.
This ended up being a rather short post, mostly because I don’t really have much to say on the matter. I shoot/hit/throw fire at stuff and it dies. The end.
