So, fantastic news today about the (still slightly far away) patch 3.3.5, in which we get a new quick-raid in the vein of Obsidian Sanctum. This time the Black Dragonflight and their sister-flight the Twilights are on the offensive and attacking the Ruby Sanctum of the Red Dragons. If you haven’t read the details yet, I urge you to have a look here.
I’ve been thinking ever since they mentioned a lead-in experience to Cataclysm that those portals under Wyrmrest Temple are just begging to be explored, and I’m glad to see that dream being realised. Zarhym basically says as much in his second post, revealing that the attack on the reds is just the beginning of Deathwing’s plan against the Wymrest accord. My mature and manly reaction to this news is….. SQUEEEE!
The possibilities are enough to get me very excited and start speculating madly. Perhaps the Black Dragonflight will launch an attack on the sanctuary of each Dragonflight in turn? Now that Malygos is dead, the lost magical treasures of the Blues are easy to plunder. Similarly, it would serve Deathwing well to weaken the Greens whilst Ysera is still asleep and incapacitated. Most importantly of all, it makes sense to do as much damage to the Bronze’s so that they are too distracted to be able to see the Cataclysm coming in the future. Perhaps Deathwing may even be able to hide his future plans from them if the Twilight Dragons can work some kind of mojo inside the Bronze Sanctum. All random speculation of course, but if this is even only vaguely in the direction Blizzard are going, its exciting.
I also have to say it’s really good to see more content being dribbled out after the release of Icecrown Citadel and as a long prelude to the Cataclysm. It’s a much more player-friendly approach than The Burning Crusade where we were left with very little to do after Black Temple. Even when we got the Sunwell as a sort of bonus-level, it only really gave the game new life for a month or so, as all but the really hardcore raiders had little more than dailies to do. Giving us a new sanctum to fight in about every month or so seems like a much better way to keep things fresh. I’ve always thought an MMO would work better in this way, with content coming out in small pieces very regularly as opposed to big massive chunks of content-cake coming out a couple of times a year. Of course generally it’s not realistic to work like that and still maintain a high-level of quality, which is why WoW is what it is. However, it seems Blizzard have been very crafty with their plans for Cataclysm, so if they are suitably prepared, it might just work!
I’m really looking forward to seeing how it all turns out.
