This post contains some very light spoilers about Deathwing. Well, actually they’re not really spoilers they’re more like conjecture based on one piece of artwork, but I am conscious that there are people out there who want Cataclsym to be a total surprise. Therefore, the actual post and said artwork is after the jump. Beware – here be dragons!
Also, as a disclaimer, the images below are taken from that lovely site, www.mmo-champion.com.
So now thats out of the way, lets get into the thick of it. Today saw the interwebs grab hold of another tasty tidbit of Cataclysm goodness, artwork of Alexstrasza and Deathwing in human form. Apparently these are actually extra pieces from an uncropped version of the big piece of artwork we already saw with the duo dueling it out in Dragon-form. Now whilst its always fun to drool over Alex the really exciting part of these pics is the big bad himself, Deathwing. Whilst Deathy (we’re close, I can call him that) has definitely gone into human form before, posing as as Lord Prestor, it hadn’t really occured to me its something that we’d see in Cataclysm. After all, slinking around as a human is all well and good when you’re preparing your masterplan, but when you’ve well, blown up the entire world you’d think all pretense and disguise would be abandoned.
Apparently this is not the case, at least if this artwork from Blizzard HQ is any indicator of their plans. But you’ll note that this time round Deathy doesn’t look like he’s exactly trying to remain incognito, unless he’s trying to blend in at a looking bad-ass convention. Presumably though he has occasional need to turn human. Most likely this will be for the same reason most dragons do, to communicate with the mortal races, which could mean anything from his Goblin slaves, his Twilight’s Hammer minions, or of course, the player.
Interacting with the player is the exciting bit. Given how quite frankly massive Deathwing is in his normal, molten-lava spewing shape, most people were assuming that he would not be turning up too often in the actual game. Unlike Arthas, it seems improbable that Deathwing would just turn up to mock the player. However it would be nice if Deathy didn’t become another Illidan, taunting us from the expansion cinematic and then remaining completely unseen until much much further down the line. It would be great to catch a few glimpses of Deathy and his evil plans in action, especially since he looks so deliciously evil in biped-mode.
That said, I hope he doesn’t become another Lich King. Arthas had at least 5 chances to kill me levelling up through Northrend, and he let me get away every damn time. Now, to be fair this doesn’t completely go against reason. Arthas himself was goaded along until his soul could be claimed for necromantic tomfoolery, it only makes sense that he’d like to do the same to us. But seriously… 5 times? I screwed up your entire plans with the Drakkari Empire, I stormed into Utgarde, I helped Sylvanas try to kill you! Maybe its time to deal with me now since I keep messing up everything you do??
I doubt Deathy will become another Arthas though, simply because Blizzard have been obsessed about making sure that all players get to face off against the Lich King (and that was generally a good thing, despite some points of the implementation). They don’t have the same need with Deathwing however. I also think they have learnt from the mistakes of Illidan. Therefore I think its safe to say we will encounter Deathwing a couple of times briefly, but not excessively until its time to actually fight the guy.
One final thought; dragons do have a tendency to turn into their mortal disguises when hanging around at Wyrmrest Temple. We also know that Deathwing will be putting various plans into motion to attack the sanctums of the other Dragonflights. There’s always a chance we may catch sight of Deathwing sooner than we think.
Right, rambling over. Back to observing Alexstrasza in human form…
